The Department of Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at Rajarata University of Sri Lanka successfully conducted a two-day workshop titled \u201cFrom Words to Numbers: Analysing Quantitative Data with SPSS.\u201d The workshop was conducted by Uthumansa Ahamed, Assistant Librarian of the Main Library at Rajarata University of Sri Lanka. The program aimed to enhance students\u2019 practical knowledge of SPSS software and quantitative data analysis in social science research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the workshop, participants were introduced to the installation of SPSS, understanding the SPSS interface, defining variables, and entering different types of social science data. In addition, students learned techniques for describing data, creating visualizations, and exploring relationships between categorical variables. The workshop was held at the Faculty Computer Laboratory on 5th and 6th March 2026, with the participation of undergraduate students pursuing the BA (Hons) degree in Sociology. The session provided valuable hands-on experience and strengthened students\u2019 analytical skills required for academic research<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conducted by: Professor Premakumara De Silva, Chairman, Standing Committee on Social Reconciliation, University Grants Commission Through group discussions, practical activities, and shared experiences, our students learned how to identify social challenges and support reconciliation processes within our communities. The workshop also helped them to  recognize their own weaknesses and work on self-improvement. By working together with people from different religions and backgrounds, they learned the value of cooperation, empathy, and collective action. This training encouraged them to become responsible individuals who can contribute to building a more inclusive and peaceful society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The successful execution of the event was made possible through the generous support of local and foreign sponsors, whose contributions played a vital role in enhancing the quality and scale of the programme. The curriculum revision of the B.A. and B.A.(Hons) in Sociology degree programmes of the Department of Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka was carried out in 2025 through a structured stakeholder consultation process. A stakeholder workshop was successfully conducted on 10th October 2025 at the faculty premises with the participation of senior academics and subjects’ experts from leading universities in Sri Lanka, including the university of Sabaragamuwa and Universities of Peradeniya, along with the academic staff of the Department of Social Sciences. The external participants included Professor Sarath Ananda (Department of Social Sciences, Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka), Professor Dhammika Herath (Department of Sociology, University of Peradeniya), Professor Pradeep Uluwaduge (Department of Social Sciences, Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka), Dr. Thushara Kamalrathne (Senior Lecturer, University of Peradeniya), and Dr. Susantha Rasnayake (Senior Lecturer, University of Peradeniya). Mr. Naveen Dharmawardhana, Manager\/Field operations Institute for participatory Interaction  in Development<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Department of Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka, successfully held a Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) Workshop on 22nd August 2025.The program aimed to strengthen the practical skills of Sociology undergraduates as amateurs’ researchers in participatory development methods. The workshop blended with enriching activities, including insightful guest lectures about PRA methods, field visits and collaborative group assignments. The sessions were conducted by two expert facilitators, Mr. Priyantha Kumara (T-Field Child Development Federation) and Mr. Naveen Dharmawardhana (Institute for Participatory Interaction in Development \u2013 IPID), who shared valuable insights and hands-on experiences. A practical field component at Mihinthale Village allowed students to apply PRA tools such as transect walks, community mapping, seasonal calendars, and focus group discussions. This real-world exposure helped bridge lecture room learning with community-based practice. The Department expresses its gratitude to the facilitators, and the Mihinthale community for their contribution to making the workshop a meaningful practical learning experiences for our undergraduates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

National Committee on Women, Ministry of Women and Child Affairs<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A two-day workshop on \u201cGender, Gender-Based Violence, and Mental Health was conducted in March 2025 with the objective of raising awareness about gender issues and gender-based violence (GBV), as well as its impact on mental health. The workshop aimed to provide participants with knowledge and practical strategies to understand and address gender-based violence in society. The program was organized in collaboration with the National Committee on Women, Ministry of Women and Child Affairs, creating a platform for meaningful discussions, knowledge sharing, and awareness-building among participants. The workshop also encouraged critical engagement with gender-related issues and promoted collective responsibility in addressing gender-based violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exploring Cinematic Love and University Love<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Department of Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at Rajarata University of Sri Lanka, successfully organized a program \u2018Exploring Cinematic Love and University Love\u201d on 13th February 2025, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Hall No. 20. The program created an engaging platform for students to explore the theme of love as represented in cinema and university life, with particular reference to the film The Japanese Wife (Bengali Movie).  The event was honored by the presence of John Dinesh, a talented actor and former Temporary Assistant Lecturer at University of Kelaniya, who joined as the guest speaker. His insightful and thought-provoking presentation provided valuable perspectives on the representation of love in film and its relevance to contemporary youth and university culture<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About the Guest Lecture Series of the Department of Social Sciences<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The Department of Social Sciences has decided to start a Guest lecture series by inviting scholars with different expertise since mid-2021. As you are all aware, all countries in the world are facing huge challenges due to Covid 19 pandemic. This pandemic has adversely affected the education sector globally. However, in developed countries of the world, this situation would be mitigated by using their digital technology. But third world countries have faced many further difficulties with poor digital technological infrastructure. However, Sri Lanka has made an amazing transition to online education of all primary, secondary and tertiary education sectors of Sri Lanka after the closure of its education institutions in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, many scholars have shown through their researches how Sri Lankan rural sector is still struggling to adapt to new normal environment because of poor facilities. All academic staff of the Department of Social Sciences decided to start this guest lecture series to disseminate knowledge with expertise of different disciplines targeting higher education sector students and the public. We hope this Guest Lecture Series will help students improve their learning and awareness of the very different perspectives on social problems of the field of social sciences in Sri Lankan context and Global context. These can be very supportive not only for the students but can also contribute to the teacher\u2019s knowledge and practices to overcome the challenges of gathering new knowledge. This guest lecture series is virtually conducted via Zoom technology and its recording will be uploaded to the department\u2019s official YouTube channel to help those who are not able to attend the virtual discussion.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n
