
Under the theme “Bridging Excellence and Compassion: Strengthening Sino-Sri Lankan Bonds through Education and Social Responsibility,” the Chinese Ambassador Scholarship Awarding Ceremony 2025 was held on November 27, 2025, at the Main Auditorium of Rajarata University of Sri Lanka (RUSL). This event marked a significant milestone in the enduring educational and cultural partnership between China and Sri Lanka.
The ceremony was graced by the presence of His Excellency Mr. Qi Zhenhong, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Sri Lanka, and his spouse, accompanied by Ms. Ji Lili, Cultural Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy. The occasion was further honored by the attendance of Dr. P.H.G. Janaka Pushpakumara, Vice Chancellor of Rajarata University, Prof. E.M.S. Ekanayake, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, esteemed deans from the respective faculties, as well as other academic and non-academic staff. The scholarship awardees and FSSH undergraduates were also present, adding to the prestige and significance of the event.
This initiative, made possible by the generous support of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, includes a scholarship fund of LKR 4.2 million (42 lakhs). The scholarship is designed to assist undergraduates who exhibit both academic excellence and financial need, ensuring that deserving students receive the financial support necessary to continue their studies uninterrupted.
Administered through the Department of Languages within the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FSSH), the scholarship prioritizes students enrolled in the Chinese BA Degree Programme. Additionally, equal opportunities are provided to Honours degree students from other departments within the faculty, ensuring fairness and inclusivity.
In his address, H.E. Mr. Qi Zhenhong commended the university’s efforts to promote Chinese language education and foster cultural exchange. He emphasized that education continues to serve as a cornerstone in the lasting friendship between China and Sri Lanka. The Vice Chancellor, Dr. P.H.G. Janaka Pushpakumara, also expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the event and extended sincere appreciation to the Chinese Embassy for their continued support of the scholarship initiative. He acknowledged the significant impact of the Chinese Ambassador Scholarship on the academic journeys of many students, recognizing the Embassy’s invaluable contribution to enhancing educational opportunities for Sri Lankan youth.
