Welcome to the Department of English Language Teaching
The Department of English Language Teaching (DELT) of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities currently extends its services to undergraduates of the six faculties of the university, as well as to the wider community, external students, and postgraduate study programmes of the university.
The DELT serves the six faculties by conducting Intensive English Programmes, ongoing credit and non-credit English Language Improvement Programmes, Remedial English Programmes, and the Diploma in English (Internal) Programme.
In keeping with the vision and mission of the DELT, the academic staff members have been able to encourage students and improve the quality of English language learning through the use of sophisticated language learning software, CALL materials, CDs, DVDs, and activity books available in the English Language Laboratory.
The DELT has recognized both global and local trends in ESL developments that enhance job market prospects and create opportunities for higher studies among undergraduates. In response to the needs of students and stakeholders, we are pleased to announce that the DELT has taken the initial steps to launch a B.A. in TESL (Hons.) Degree Programme.
In addition, the department has been conducting two extension courses in English—namely, the Advanced Certificate in English (Extension) and the Diploma in English (Extension)—for over two decades, catering to school leavers and individuals employed in both the public and private sectors.

Message from the Head
Welcome to the Department of English Language Teaching of Rajarata University of Sri Lanka. The Department of English Language Teaching remains one of the key departments contributing to the nation by producing professionally qualified graduates with a strong command of English, who can serve as teachers, educators, supervisors, and administrators.
To achieve this, the department aims to instill the concept of lifelong learning in its students. The four pillars of language learning—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—are integrated into course delivery to ensure the balanced development of language skills.
Over the years, attention to not only what is taught but also how it is taught has become a hallmark of our programme delivery. In addition to undergraduate programmes in English, the department has also extended its services to the wider community by offering a range of extension courses in English, which have been well received by participants.
According to feedback from our students, the dedication, experience, and expertise of our lecturers are highly commendable.
As the Head of the Department of English Language Teaching, it gives me great pleasure to endorse the department’s reputation for producing quality practitioners.
