Department of Social Sciences

Welcome to the Department of Social Sciences

The Department of Social Sciences at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka, has been an integral academic unit since the establishment of the Faculty in 1995. In its early years, the Department contributed to a wide range of disciplines, including Sociology, Economics, Environmental Management, Management, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Studies, and Travel and Tourism Management, thereby establishing a strong multidisciplinary academic foundation. Over time, the Department has evolved towards a more specialized academic focus and currently offers degree programmes primarily in Sociology and Tourism Management under the Bachelor of Arts degree programmes. One of the key highlights of the Department is the Bachelor of Arts Honours (B.A. Hons) in Sociology, a well-established programme that provides advanced academic training and research opportunities in sociological studies. At present, the Department provides academic services to approximately 800 undergraduate students annually and is supported by a committed academic staff comprising two professors, two senior lecturers, one lecturer, and four temporary assistant lecturers. The Department remains dedicated to promoting critical thinking, research excellence, and socially relevant knowledge, with the aim of equipping graduates with the skills and perspectives needed to address contemporary social challenges and contribute effectively to national and global development.

Mission

The mission of the Department is to train and produce high-quality graduates equipped with competence and skills required to meet and respond to diverse demands and needs in the socio-economic development of the national and global environment ensuring the excellence of education in social sciences.

Message from the Head of the Department

Welcome to the Department of Social Sciences.

Since its establishment in 1995, the Department has developed into a vibrant academic community committed to excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement, while continuously adapting to evolving academic and societal needs. Our programmes in Sociology and Tourism Management, particularly the Bachelor of Arts Honours in Sociology programme, are designed to promote critical thinking, analytical skills, and a deep understanding of social realities, ensuring that students are well prepared to engage with real-world challenges. We take pride in our dedicated academic staff, whose commitment to high-quality education and mentorship supports the intellectual and professional growth of our students. As a Department, we remain focused on strengthening our academic programmes, enhancing research capacity, and fostering meaningful collaborations, with the aim of producing socially responsible graduates who can contribute effectively to national development and the global community.
