Message of the Dean

Welcome to the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka!

The Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at Rajarata University of Sri Lanka, established in 1996, is one of the university’s founding faculties. Initially composed of just two departments—the Department of Social Sciences and the Department of Humanities—the faculty has significantly expanded over the years and now includes eight diverse departments. Each department plays an essential role in creating an academic environment focused on producing graduates who are well-prepared for both local and global job markets.

As the Dean of the Faculty, I extend a warm welcome to all students choosing to pursue their bachelor’s degrees here. It is a privilege to guide you as you embark on an intellectually rewarding journey that will shape both your academic and personal growth. The faculty is dedicated to providing a high-quality education that equips students with the necessary knowledge, skills, and critical thinking abilities to succeed in their chosen fields. The disciplines within Social Sciences and Humanities are vital for societal development, as they delve into human behavior, economic dynamics, cultural heritage, languages, communication, and environmental changes. These fields play a crucial role in preserving cultural heritage and fostering regional and national development while helping us navigate contemporary challenges in an ever-evolving global context.

In response to global changes, the faculty has revised its curriculum to ensure it meets both national and societal needs. The updated curriculum emphasizes the role of Social Sciences and Humanities in shaping policies, fostering social cohesion, promoting sustainable development, and appreciating heritage. A key component of this revision is a mandatory 6-month internship for students enrolled in the B.A and B.A Honors programs. This internship allows students to gain real-world experience, bridging academic theory and practical application, while preparing them to contribute to national progress and address contemporary social issues. Additionally, final-year students are required to complete a research project, enabling them to apply their academic learning to solve real-world challenges and further develop their research skills.

The Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities is proud of its highly qualified academic staff, who are committed to supporting students’ success. These professors, experts in their respective fields, bring a combination of innovative research and teaching strategies to the classroom, providing an enriching educational experience. Their expertise and dedication ensure that students receive a quality education, encouraging both intellectual and personal growth.

Beyond academics, the faculty values holistic student development. Students are encouraged to engage in co-curricular activities, student clubs, and community service projects, which foster leadership, teamwork, and other essential skills. These activities provide a well-rounded education that extends beyond the classroom and helps students develop important life skills.

The faculty offers a range of state-of-the-art facilities, such as computer labs, GIS lab, archaeological lab, soft skills labs, an English Language Laboratory, and a Business Incubation Center. These resources provide students with exceptional opportunities for skill development and encourage a culture of lifelong learning, preparing them for future careers in a variety of fields.

Success requires determination, hard work, and resilience, and I encourage students to believe in their potential. With the full support of the faculty, I am confident that each student will overcome challenges and achieve great things. In doing so, they will contribute to the reputation of Rajarata University both nationally and internationally.

In conclusion, I once again welcome you to the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. Approach this new chapter with enthusiasm, curiosity, and a passion for knowledge. We are committed to ensuring that your academic journey is both fulfilling and successful, and we wish you the best as you begin this exciting phase of your education.
