Department of Information Technology Conducts Workshop on Effective Use of the University

The Department of Information Technology of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka, successfully conducted a workshop on the effective use of the University Learning Management System (LMS) for academic purposes on 12 August 2026 at the Faculty Computer Laboratory.
The event was organized under the guidance of Prof. EMS Ekanayake, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, and Prof. D.S.W Gunawardane, Head of the Department of Information Technology with the objective of enhancing the knowledge of academic staff in effectively using the LMS to support teaching and learning activities. The programme focused on important LMS functions and practical techniques that can be applied in the preparation and delivery of
university courses.
Academic staff members participated in the session and engaged in practical activities designed to strengthen their understanding of LMS-based teaching and learning. The workshop also provided an opportunity for participants to discuss common challenges and explore effective ways of integrating the LMS into their academic activities.
The session was conducted by the Department of Information Technology with the aim of supporting academic staff in making more effective use of digital technologies in their teaching practices.

LMS Training Programme Conducted for First-Year Online Students by the Department of
Information Technology
The Department of Information Technology of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka, conducted an online training programme on the effective use of the Learning Management System (LMS) for first-year, first-semester students of the faculty on 21 July 2026.
The training programme was conducted under the supervision of Prof. D.S.W. Gunawardane, Head of the Department of Information Technology, with the objective of familiarizing newly enrolled students with the essential features and academic functions of the University’s LMS. The programme was facilitated by the resource persons from the Department of Information
Technology, R.A.D.P Rajapaksha, A Sharanjah, and W.A.M.D Madusanka Bandara, who provided students with practical guidance on using the LMS effectively for their academic activities. As the 2024/2025 academic first-year, first-semester students are engaged in their academic activities through an online learning mode, having a sound understanding of the LMS is
particularly important for their successful participation in the teaching and learning process. Therefore, the training programme was designed to provide students with the essential knowledge and practical skills required to navigate and utilize the LMS confidently in their day-to-day academic work.
During the session, students were guided on how to access and review lecture notes, learning materials, and other academic resources uploaded by lecturers through the LMS. They were also introduced to the procedures for submitting assignments and using other essential LMS facilities that support online learning and academic communication. The programme provided a valuable opportunity for students to become familiar with the University’s digital learning environment from the beginning of their university education. The practical guidance provided during the session is expected to help students engage more
effectively with online learning activities and make productive use of the LMS throughout their academic journey.

IT Competition 2024: A Day of Technology and Talent
The much-anticipated IT Competition 2024, organized by the Department of IT, was successfully held on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM at the IT Lab. This event brought together some of the brightest minds among our students, showcasing their general IT knowledge and awareness of the latest trends in technology.
