Welcome to the Department of Social Sciences
The Department of Social Sciences has been in function since the establishment of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities in 1995. Initially, the Department of Social Sciences conducted courses from wide range of fields including Sociology, Economics, Environmental Management, Management, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Studies, and Travel and Tourism Management. In 2015, the Department of Environment Management was established after the division of the Department of Social Sciences. The Department of Economics was founded as a distinct Department in 2020, separating from the Department of Social Sciences. At present, the respective Department offers the degree programs for Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Arts. (Hons) in Sociology. Sociology and Tourism Management are the two main disciplines offer under the B.A degree programs of the faculty. Information Communication Technology (ICT) course is offered as a basic course by the department for all students of the faculty.

The mission of the Department is to train and produce high-quality graduates equipped with competence and skills required to meet and respond to diverse demands and needs in the socio-economic development of the national and global environment ensuring the excellence of education in social sciences.

Head’s Message
Welcome to the Department of Social Sciences at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka. Our department is committed to promoting academic excellence, critical thinking, and research in the field of social sciences.
The department offers Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree programs, including the BA Honours in Sociology, with the aim of developing knowledgeable and socially responsible graduates who can contribute meaningfully to society. Through our academic programs, students are encouraged to understand social structures, cultural dynamics, and contemporary social issues both locally and globally.
Currently, the Department of Social Sciences provides academic opportunities in two main disciplines: Sociology and Tourism Management. Our dedicated academic staff continuously work to create an inspiring learning environment through lectures, research activities, field visits, workshops, and community-based initiatives. We strive to prepare students to become professionals, researchers, and responsible citizens who can address the complex challenges of modern workforce.
